Tribute & Message From The Family

Edward J. Underwood, the devoted and loving husband of Mary "Susie" (Pelham) Underwood, went to heaven on Oct. 5, 2016.

Edward and Mary were married on June 17, 1950, at Sacred Heart Church in Hudson. They have been blessed with four children, the late Mary Lou; Sally, E.J. and Mark.

Ed was the son of the late Edward Sr. and Elsie Underwood of Adrian. Ed was born, worked and lived in the Adrian community his entire life. He was a proud 1946 Adrian High School graduate. Upon graduation Ed began a long and distinguished career in Lenawee County, first as an electrical engineer at Tecumseh Products.

With a vision, together Ed and Mary began to establish their own small business growing and selling strawberries. The roots of it all began to grow in 1951 and today the business is known as Underwood Nursery and Tree Farm. They were compassionate souls and viewed a hard day's work with great pride. As the years passed, his sons, E.J. and Mark, returned from college and joined their father in the Underwood business. Then to his joy, his grandson, Kyle, returned from college and also joined his business. Ed's grandchildren and great-grandchildren were a very important part of his life.

Ed was a faithful Detroit Pistons' fan. Ed was also a horse breeder of standard bred racehorses for more 40 years. He enjoyed traveling throughout the state in his motorhome with the love of his life, Susie, to follow their horses at the local fairs. Ed was a master bookkeeper. He was a grower of trees and shrubs on over 40 acres. He was recognized for being a member of the Michigan Nurseryman Association for more than 50 years. His dog, J.J., gave him comfort and was his pal.

Ed was a true believer in family and his devotion to them. He had a great pride in his work and accomplishments, all the while looking out for others and having a compassionate heart for those in need.

He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Mary Lou Underwood; his parents, Edward Sr. and Elsie; and sisters, Mildred Beyar and Mary Jean Robertson.

He is survived by his loving and cherished wife of 66 years, Mary Alice "Susie" (Pelham) Underwood; daughter, Sally (Ricky D. Raeff) of Manitou Beach; sons, E.J. of Adrian and Mark (Sarah) of Adrian; grandchildren, Jacob (Kayla) Underwood of DePere, Wis.; Kyle (Nicole) Underwood of Adrian and Alma Underwood of California; great-grandchildren, Edward and Harvey (sons of Kyle and Nicole Underwood) and Scarlett and Crew (children of Jacob and Kayla Underwood). Also surviving is extended family member William "Billy" Hendershott.

The Funeral Liturgy for Edward J. Underwood will be offered at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2016, at St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church, 506 N. Union St., Tecumseh, MI. with Fr. Dan Wheeler presiding. Burial will take place at Brookside Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 10, 2016, at St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church, where a Vigil Prayer Service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will also take place from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2016, at St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church with the Funeral Liturgy following at 11 a.m.

So sorry that your family has lost your father/grandfather. I met the family in spring 2012, and have always enjoyed visits and conversation with Ed/Mary. They always were so nice and reminded me of my own parents. I will miss Ed very much but have fond memories of all our visits. Rick Raeff (and kids). God bless to the family.

So sorry to hear of Ed passing away. I still remember him at the time clock waiting to punch out at the Tecumseh Products Company - then when he and Susie started the nursery Harvey and I had them for our lawn service company. Now today I still have the same lawn care program with them. I think one of my fondest memory is when Harvey and I would deliver cookies to them at Christmas time - they always looked forward to that. They gave us a plastic Santa head cookie jar that I still have. Rest in Peace and may God continue to look over Susie and your family in the years to come.
